American-born Mondo Duplantis set a new pole vaulting record while competing for Sweden at the Olympics.

 American-born pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis set a new world record for the ninth time at the Paris Olympics on Monday, clinching the gold medal for Sweden. The 24-year-old from Louisiana soared to a height of 6.25 meters, surpassing his previous record of 6.24 meters set at the Xiamen Diamond League in China this April. His vaults soared higher than a giraffe, demonstrating his extraordinary prowess. Sam Kendricks from the U.S. secured silver with a vault of 5.95 meters, while Greece's Emmanouil Karalis earned bronze with 5.90 meters.

Since February 2020, Duplantis has consistently shattered world records. Along with his Olympic gold medals in Paris and Tokyo, he has won four World Championships—two indoors and two outdoors. His dominance in pole vaulting has been likened to Katie Ledecky's supremacy in the 1,500-meter freestyle and Simone Biles' excellence in gymnastics.

Duplantis, whose parents are both athletes (his father a former pole vaulter with a personal best of 5.80 meters in 1993), competes for Sweden, the homeland of his mother. Despite being born in the U.S. and attending college at Louisiana State University—alma mater of runner Sha'Carri Richardson—he moved to Sweden after graduation. He was honored as Sweden's Newcomer of the Year in 2018 and Swedish Male Athlete of the Year in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
